Learning to ride a bike provides independence, transportation, community and exercise. Bike for Life Camp teaches this important life skill using adaptive bikes to individuals with disabilities.
Central Oregon Disability Support Network’s (CODSN) mission is to connect families with resources and each other in order to recognize, promote and value diversity in a welcoming community. They see disability as just another aspect of the diversity so essential to the fullness of the human race. Just like anybody else, the keys to success for those with disabilities are high expectations, resources, community support, and advocacy skills. Their goal is to create a space where families and individuals can connect with each other, create a positive and strengths-based vision of the future, find the practical resources they need, and be empowered to lead the fulfilling lives they can.
Bike for Life Camp is a 5-day camp where the CODSN team of professionals and volunteers safely teach the riders everything involved in how to ride a bicycle. The team uses highly specialized adaptive technology to make riding bicycles safe and accessible for children of different abilities. Through the bike camp, riders will go home with the knowledge of how to ride a bike, a helmet of their own, and a full adjustment to their bicycle so that they can safely practice after camp is complete. This summer at the two locations, there were a total of 41 campers, from 5 years old to 42 years old, with 43 volunteers. One parent said: “This was an amazing experience for my son. It made my heart glad to see him so excited about coming every day!”
We are happy to support Bike for Life Camp and excited for all the individuals that will be riding their bikes for years to come.
