Malheur County Veterans Transportation Program – Ontario, Oregon
Malheur Council on Aging and Community Services is a private, non-profit organization that provides services for seniors over the age of 60, veterans, and person with disabilities in Malheur County, Oregon.
The agency consists of two departments, the Senior Department and the Transportation Department. The Transportation Department has many different divisions including a one that provides no-cost, door-to-door medical transportation services to Veterans of Malheur County.
Due to the large geographical size of this rural county served by the Veterans’ Transportation Program, increases in new ridership and rising costs, the current grant funding for that program was being quickly depleted and overspent for the 2021-2022 funding cycle.
According to the 2020 American Community Survey, there are currently 1,898 veterans residing in Malheur County. Many of these veterans are seniors or disabled and can no longer drive or require accessible transportation options to get them to important medical appointments. The Veteran Transportation Program is the only accessible public transportation program to provide this service to the veterans of Malheur County.
The Malheur County Veteran Transportation Program plays a vital role in the lives of Malheur veterans as it helps to keep them connected to critical medical services through the rural county. This grant helped fill the gap so that transportation services would continue uninterrupted through the end of July 2022 when their new fiscal year would begin. The JTMF Foundation is proud to support such a worthy and vital service to Veterans who have served our county.
