Coastal Families Relief Nursery - Coos Bay, Oregon

Relief Nurseries provide accessible, comprehensive family support services to low-income parents with children aged 0-5 at high risk for abuse or neglect. Relief Nurseries reduce the likelihood of abuse and increase family functioning and resilience. Their experienced teachers work with parents to develop skills that support nurturing and attachment - the greatest predictor of positive outcomes for children. They do this using a holistic approach including therapeutic early childhood classroom programs, home visits, outreach services, and parent education programs.

While many communities in Oregon have a Relief Nursery, this section of the Southern Oregon Coast did not. Under the direction of Oregon Association of Relief Nurseries (OARN), Coastal Families Relief Nursery has recently opened its doors to support at-risk youth in the communities of Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston at its site in Coos Bay. On top of the therapeutic classroom and individualized home visits, enrolled families have additional support through a diaper bank, food pantry, and clothing closet.

Securing a location, outfitting it, lining up partners, and finding talented staff were just some of the key steps needed to start offering services. The grant from JTMF Foundation in support of salaries is just part of the many individuals and organizations helping Coastal Families Relief Nursery build a strong foundation to ensure long term success.
